Whole Brain Science Writing Competition

Discovering Young Scientists
for the World

Inspired by Northwestern University’s Whole-Brain Engineering philosophy, we created this platform to spark original ideas among younger generations and make their voices heard. We believe investigative and persuasive writing provides an ideal way to unite two essential elements of whole brain thinking—scientific literacy and humanistic understanding.

Start with something you have actually noticed. Use what you have learned at school — any subject, not only the sciences — then go and find out the rest for yourself. Write it so clearly that anyone could follow you.

Four Stages of Whole Brain Thinking

Observe

Start with something that catches your attention—a pattern, problem, contradiction, or unanswered question.

Wonder

Turn curiosity into a question worth pursuing. Identify what you do not yet understand and why it matters.

Investigate

Look for evidence, mechanisms, and competing explanations. Find what is known, uncertain, or disputed.

Connect

Connect what you have learned into a clear line of reasoning and build an explanation of your own.

The goal is not simply to repeat what is known, but to build an explanation of your own.
